What ’tailored’ actually means

No fixed curriculum, just what you need.

Every Dutch learner is in a different place. Some people have been studying Dutch for months and just need a safe space to actually use it without someone switching to English. Others want to work through specific grammar points with examples and exercises. And others want both.

Before your first session, you let me know where you are and what you’d like to work on. The session is built around that. If your needs change, the next session changes too.

Not sure where to start? That’s completely fine as well. Figuring out where you are and what would help most is something we can do together.

🗣️ Conversation practice with feedback

Speak in Dutch on topics relevant to your life in Flanders, and get structured feedback on grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation as you go.

📝 Grammar with exercises

Work through a specific grammar point with a clear explanation and exercises. Take the pace you need. Ask all the questions you can’t ask in a class.

🔊 Pronunciation

Belgian Dutch has its own sounds and rhythms. Focus on the patterns that are tripping you up, with real-time feedback and practice.

🎯 A combination

Most sessions are a mix of a few of these, depending on what came up since the last one. You set the direction — the session follows.

who this is for

Wherever you are on your Dutch journey.

Have you started learning Dutch but find yourself stuck, understanding more than you can say, or saying more than feels natural? Or are you looking for a conversation partner who gives you honest, structured feedback rather than polite encouragement that doesn’t move you forward?

New to Dutch

Building your first words and sentences at a pace that works for you.

Can read, can't speak

You understand a lot, but freeze when you need to actually say something. That gap closes with practice.

Pronunciation struggles

The words are there, but the sounds feel wrong. Focused work on pronunciation and intonation.

Specific context

Work, neighbourhood, school pick-up… Whatever situations feel hardest, we’ll practicse those first.

Book a session

Two session lengths. Same one-on-one approach.

Every session is one-on-one, online, and structured around your specific needs. You’ll leave with concrete feedback and things to work on, not just a conversation you can’t measure.

Not sure which to choose? A 30-minute session is a great way to try things out or work through one specific thing. The 1-hour session gives more space for a mix of conversation, grammar, and feedback.

Mieke Vanhengel

I’m a language coach, subtitle translator, and teacher based in Belgium. I’ve been working with languages professionally for over 10 years: in the classroom, in translation, and in one-on-one coaching.

I’ve taught Dutch and English in a classroom setting for years before going freelance, and teaching has never really left me. What I enjoy most is watching someone realise that Dutch isn’t as impossible as they thought, that they can actually say the thing they needed to say.

Want a full self-paced course alongside your sessions?

Dutch Through Stories is an A0 → A1 course built specifically for expats in Flanders. Story-led, interactive, Belgian Dutch throughout. These one-on-one sessions pair naturally with it.: the course gives you structure and vocabulary, these sessions give you a space to use it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to speak any Dutch before booking?

Not at all. The sessions are adapted to wherever you are. Complete beginners are very welcome. Just let me know your starting point when you book, so the session can be designed around you from the start.

How does the booking work?

You book and pay for a session via ThriveCart. Click either button above. After booking, you’ll receive a confirmation, and we can coordinate timing directly. Sessions take place online.

What will we actually work on?

That depends entirely on you. Before the session, let me know what you’d like to focus on: conversation practice, a grammar point, pronunciation, or a mix. The session is built around your answer. If you’re not sure what you need, we can figure that out together, too.

Why Belgian Dutch specifically?

Because if you’re living in Flanders, that’s the Dutch that surrounds you. The vocabulary, the expressions, and the sounds of spoken Flemish are different enough from Dutch spoken in the Netherlands that it matters which one you practise. Every session uses the Dutch you’ll actually encounter here.

Can I book sessions regularly?

Yes, many people book weekly sessions, or every two weeks, as part of an ongoing practice. Each session is booked individually, so there’s no long-term commitment and you can adjust the frequency as your schedule changes.

How do these sessions work alongside Dutch Through Stories?

They complement each other naturally. The self-paced course gives you grammar structure, vocabulary, and interactive exercises. The one-on-one sessions give you a space to use all of it out loud, get real-time feedback, and ask the questions that come up as you work through it.

I’m from the Netherlands — can I still book a session?

Absolutely, but it might not be ideal. Dutch is Dutch, and for building confidence and language learning, these sessions work just as well if you’re learning Dutch in the Netherlands. However, one thing to be aware of: I’m Flemish, and I speak with a Flemish accent. I can adjust the vocabulary I use depending on your context, but my accent is my accent. For most purposes, that’s a non-issue, but it’s worth knowing upfront.
